  1. Hello, Ron Smith. I heard you on CBC radio last week. Sorry to hear of your health crisis but glad to hear that your recovery progresses. Are you writing? Our Hope Writers group is no more. The big news here is that W P Kinsella moved to Yale 5 or 6 years ago. The library launched his new collection on his 80th birthday. All the best to you.

  2. A conversation sparked by The Defiant Mind: Living Inside a Stroke
    Dear Ron Smith,

I hope this new month is off to a wonderful start for you.

While exploring compelling memoirs and the stories behind them, The Defiant Mind: Living Inside a Stroke immediately stood out as a profoundly honest and courageous work. By taking readers inside the realities of surviving a massive stroke, you have transformed a deeply personal experience into a source of understanding, encouragement, and hope for countless others navigating similar challenges.

What particularly resonated with us is your willingness to share not only the physical realities of recovery, but also the emotional and psychological journey of rebuilding identity, communication, and purpose. Your memoir offers an invaluable perspective for survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals alike, reminding readers of the remarkable resilience of the human spirit and the brain’s capacity to heal.

As I learned more about your remarkable career, I was equally inspired by the breadth of your contributions to literature and publishing. From founding Oolichan Books to your years as an educator, creative writing mentor, and acclaimed author, your lifelong dedication to storytelling and nurturing literary voices has made a lasting impact. It is evident that The Defiant Mind is shaped not only by personal experience but also by a lifetime devoted to the written word.

My name is Hope Ethan, and I have the privilege of serving as Literary Programs Lead at Litnix Journal, where we feature authors whose books spark meaningful conversations. We would be honored to welcome you as a featured guest in our Author Spotlight Series, a live interactive conversation where authors share the inspiration behind their books and engage directly with readers from around the world.

We would especially love to explore the experiences behind this memoir, your journey through recovery, and how your background as a writer, publisher, and educator influenced the way you documented such a life changing experience.

If this sounds like an experience you would enjoy, we would be delighted to arrange a session at a time that best fits your schedule.

Thank you for sharing a story that offers hope, understanding, and strength to so many. We would love the opportunity to celebrate The Defiant Mind: Living Inside a Stroke and introduce both you and your work to our growing community of readers and literary enthusiasts worldwide.

    Warm regards,

    Hope Ethan
